The Value of Knowing What Matters Most: Using the Preferences for Everyday Living Inventory (PELI) to Transform Care

Nursing Homes Prefer the PELI

All nursing homes want to provide high-quality, person-centered care to their residents. Encouraging staff to develop meaningful resident relationships and align care with residents’ personal preferences is an important first step.

The Preferences for Everyday Living Inventory (PELI) is a nationally recognized quality improvement strategy for nursing homes, promoting person-centered care that better meets the expectations of residents, families, and staff, and distinguishing high-quality providers from their peers.

Resident Preferences are Powerful

The PELI is a foundational component in a suite of evidence-based tools that nursing homes can use to enhance the quality of resident care. It helps the care team gather individuals’ preferences in important domains of daily living and then use this information to personalize residents’ care plans.

Through an easy-to-use, customizable questionnaire, the PELI gleans immediately actionable information that can be used to individualize care and improve resident well-being. Completing the PELI can be incorporated into existing workflows, and any extra staff time spent assessing patient preferences is more than justified by its benefits.

The Research is Clear – the PELI is Good for Nursing Homes, Staff, and Residents

The PELI’s return on investment for nursing homes and their residents is evident:

  • Fewer substantiated complaints. Nursing homes that used the PELI to inform care plans were less likely to have substantiated complaints, which typically lead to fines or additional personnel effort on plans of correction. Reducing the time and money spent to resolving complaints frees up more time and resources for resident care.
  • Staff value the PELI and find it to be a meaningful use of their time. “The PELI is a good tool to use. I mean, it’s good just in general, and it’s good for your staff well-being to know your residents, too.”
  • Higher star ratings. Research has found nursing homes that use the PELI are more likely to have a 4- or 5- star rating, and to be deficiency-free. Better ratings may lead to increased census.
  • Better health outcomes for residents. Not surprisingly, studies find residents benefit from person-centered care initiatives that include the PELI, showing better functional outcomes and reduced pain and depressive symptoms.
  • Thriving residents. The PELI promotes meaningful engagement, which affords opportunities to thrive. Prospective residents and their families see this and may be more likely to choose your care community.
